        abstract = {Hochschulen weltweit kommt eine bedeutende Rolle zu, wenn es um eine nachhaltige Entwicklung geht. Mit ihren Handlungsfeldern Lehre, Forschung, Betrieb und Transfer können sie auf ganz verschiedenen Ebenen ansetzen, um nachhaltige Entwicklung auf dem eigenen Campus, aber auch weit darüber hinaus zu fördern. Doch hochschulische Nachhaltigkeit passiert nicht auf Knopfdruck. Vielmehr bedarf es eines gesamtinstitutionellen Ansatzes (Whole Institution Approach) sowie geeigneter Strukturen, Prozesse und Akteur:innen, über die nachhaltige Entwicklung Stück für Stück institutionalisiert wird: die Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance. Diese Dissertation dokumentiert einen fünfjährigen Forschungsprozess, der sich aus verschiedenen Perspektiven der Natur der Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance an deutschen Hochschulen, ihren Anforderungen und Ausprägungen gewidmet hat. Die empirische Basis besteht aus zehn Expert:inneninterviews sowie 61 Stakeholder- Interviews, die entlang semi-strukturierter Leitfäden geführt wurden. Mit dieser multiplen Fallstudie konnten elf umfangreiche Fallprofile erstellt und die jeweiligen Nachhaltigkeitsprozesse aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven nachvollzogen werden. In fünf veröffentlichten Fachartikeln und dem vorliegenden Rahmenpapier werden die gesammelten Erkenntnisse präsentiert und diskutiert. Aus Artikel I und II ist insbesondere das Selbstreflexionstool „Governance Equalizer“ für hochschulische Nachhaltigkeitsprozesse anhand von funktionalen Anforderungen hervorgegangen. Artikel III findet einen Ansatz zur Systematisierung hochschulischer Organisationskultur im Kontext nachhaltiger Hochschulentwicklung. Und Artikel IV führt diese beiden Betrachtungsweisen von Funktion und Kultur zusammen und untersucht anhand von vier konkreten und sehr unterschiedlichen Nachhaltigkeitsprozessen ihre potenziellen Wechselwirkungen. Artikel V bietet schließlich – basierend auf den vorangegangenen Artikeln und dem aktuellen Umsetzungsstand nachhaltiger Entwicklung an Hochschulen – die Formulierung von Vorstellungen und Forderungen für die zukünftige Entwicklung der (deutschen) Hochschullandschaft. Das Rahmenpapier bettet die Artikel ein zwischen 1.) einer umfassenden Definition von nachhaltiger Hochschulentwicklung und hochschulischer Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance als Grundlage und 2.) einer Diskussion um das Verhältnis zwischen Governance-Strukturen und Hochschulkultur sowie einer übergreifenden Diskussion zum Verhältnis von Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance und allgemeiner Governance an Hochschulen. Die so gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sind vielfältig und bereichern den noch jungen Diskurs sowohl um ganz praktische Instrumente zur konkreten Anwendung für Hochschulakteur:innen auf ihre jeweilige Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance, als auch um theoretische Überlegungen und Impulse, die die hochschulpolitische und strategische Einordnung von hochschulischer Nachhaltigkeitsgovernance zum Inhalt haben.; Higher education institutions (HEIs) around the world have an important role to play when it comes to sustainable development. With their fields of action teaching, research, operations and transfer, they can take action at very different levels to promote sustainable development on their own campuses, but also far beyond. But sustainability at HEIs does not happen at the push of a button. Rather, it requires a whole-institution approach as well as appropriate structures, processes and actors through which sustainable development is institutionalized step by step: sustainability governance. This dissertation documents a five-year research process that addressed the nature of sustainability governance at German HEIs, its requirements and characteristics from different perspectives. The empirical basis consists of ten expert interviews as well as 61 stakeholder interviews conducted along semi-structured guidelines. This multiple case study made it possible to create eleven comprehensive case profiles and to understand the respective sustainability processes from different perspectives. Five published journal articles and this framework paper present and discuss the collected findings. In particular, a self-assessment tool, the so-called governance equalizer, for HEIs’ sustainability processes based on functional requirements emerged from Articles I and II. Article III finds an approach to the systematization of organizational culture in the context of sustainable development at HEIs. And Article IV brings these two perspectives of function and culture together, examining their potential interdependencies through four specific and very different sustainability processes. Finally, Article V offers – based on the previous articles and the current implementation status of sustainable development at HEIs – the formulation of ideas and demands for the future development of the (German) HEI landscape. This framework paper embeds the articles between a comprehensive definition of sustainable university development and university sustainability governance as a basis and a discussion of the relationship between governance structures and university culture as well as an overarching discussion of the relationship between sustainability governance and general governance at HEIs. The insights gained this way are diverse and enrich the still young discourse both with very practical instruments for concrete application by HEI stakeholders to their respective sustainability governance, as well as with theoretical considerations and impulses that deal with the political and strategic coordination of HEI sustainability governance.},
