Abstract

The study examines the current situation of design education at German institutions of higher education (Universität, university of applied sciences / Fachhochschule and art school / Kunsthochschule). A well-founded concept of design with international reference is developed and design education is placed in the context of professional practice and German higher education legislation. To this end, the German conceptual history of the loan word “design” and its current conceptual levels were first examined. The appointment practice of the central so-called „design / draft professorship“ (those who teach design project courses) was examined by means of a quantitative survey and compared with the previous results. The results show in detail the considerable challenges design education is confronted with. Among other things, the anchoring of the discipline in the German higher education system and the design professorship in higher education law is inadequate. The strong connection to past market successes via the central teaching staff and their appointment practice (during the period under investigation), coupled with a simultaneous disregard for the area of theoretical penetration and professional university teaching, reduces the ability to ensure future-oriented, higher education in the field of design for leaders in all parts of society – education, business, culture … The study concludes with recommendations for improving design education in Germany. These include the adaptation of higher education legislation, the development of a qualification profile for design professors and the strengthening of theoretical penetration and professional higher education teaching in the field of design.
